The best thing to clean your windscreen with is a good purpose windscreen cleaner and soft paper tissue.

Household-Window-Cleaner

Abrasive Products

Many domestic glass cleaning products contain ammonia. This is harmful if inhaled and will discolor your windscreen glass and damage synthetic materials such as vinyl and leather.

Check that your chosen product is suitable for windscreens and that it doesn't contain ammonia like most domestic glass cleaner sprays.

White-Vinegar

Water & Vinegar Dilutions

Most windscreens are slightly tinted. As vinegar is highly acidic, using it to cleanse your windscreen, even when diluted, will cause discolouration.

Microfibre-Cloth

Materials washed with fabric conditioner will leave a residue on your windscreen and will also leave smears.

Rinse through in water only.

In winter months, it is best to warm your car up and let the windscreen defrost naturally using your heater. You might also wish to use a de-iceing/pre-iceing liquid or spray.

Kettle

Boiling Water 100°C

The slightest chip on your windscreen will instantly grow into a crack if you pour hot water on it when it is iced over due to the coefficient of thermal expansion.

Don't risk causing your windscreen to shatter by pouring hot, or even tepid water onto it.

The tiny scratches left behind from scraping away the ice during winter months may eventually lead to a chipped or cracked windscreen. They also impair visibility and which may lead to an accident.

Your windscreen may well mist over from the inside as you set off unless your car has been heated from the inside first. Allow yourself a little extra time for your journey.

Condensation and misty windows can be a pain in any car. Sometimes this is a sign of water ingress into your vehicle which if left untreated can cost you big money.

If this problem continues for more than a day or two, especially if its mild, check that the seals around your side glass or side windows are intact.

Alternatively, ask your mechanic to look to see if there are otherwise any leaks.

Try to avoid masking the problem with products like Silica and identify the source of any leak before any damage is incurred.

The best way to demist your windscreen is to vapourise any excess water by turning on the air conditioning and winding down your windows to allow the water to evaporate naturally.
